Pietro Ferrero
Italian entrepreneur and founder of Ferrero SpA
Pietro Ferrero (2 September 1898 – 2 March 1949) was an Italian entrepreneur and the founder of Ferrero SpA, one of the world's largest confectionery companies. He is best known for creating the recipe that would eventually become Nutella, a popular chocolate-hazelnut spread.
Early Life
Pietro Ferrero was born in Dogliani, a small town in the Piedmont region of Italy. From a young age, Ferrero was involved in the family business, which was primarily focused on the production of pastries and confectionery.
Career
In the 1940s, Ferrero began experimenting with recipes that combined cocoa and hazelnuts, which were abundant in the Piedmont region. Due to the scarcity of cocoa during World War II, Ferrero sought to create a product that could satisfy the demand for chocolate while using less cocoa.
In 1946, Ferrero developed a paste made from hazelnuts, sugar, and a small amount of cocoa, which he called "Pasta Gianduja." This product was initially sold as a solid block that could be sliced and served on bread. The success of this product led to the founding of Ferrero SpA in Alba, Italy.
Ferrero SpA
Under Ferrero's leadership, the company expanded rapidly. In 1951, the recipe was modified to create a creamy version of the spread, which was named "Supercrema." This product laid the foundation for what would later become Nutella.
Ferrero's innovative approach to product development and marketing helped establish Ferrero SpA as a major player in the confectionery industry. The company introduced several other successful products, including Mon Chéri, Kinder Chocolate, and Tic Tac.
Legacy
Pietro Ferrero passed away in 1949, but his legacy continued through the work of his son, Michele Ferrero, who took over the company and further expanded its global reach. Today, Ferrero SpA is known for its commitment to quality and innovation, with products enjoyed by millions around the world.
