Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), also known as humpback salmon, is a species of anadromous fish in the salmon family. It is native to the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding rivers and streams. Pink salmon are the smallest of the Pacific salmon species, with an average weight of 1.5 to 2 kg (3.3 to 4.4 lb) and length of 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 in). They have a distinct lifecycle that differentiates them from other salmon species, making them a subject of interest in both commercial fishing and ecological studies.
Biology and Lifecycle
Pink salmon have a two-year lifecycle, which is the shortest among Pacific salmon. They are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean, then return to freshwater to spawn and die. This migration is known as anadromous migration. The species is characterized by its light pink flesh, from which it gets its name, and the large hump that males develop on their backs during the spawning season.
Spawning
Spawning occurs in the late summer and fall. Females lay eggs in gravel nests called redds. After spawning, both males and females die, a phenomenon known as semelparity. The eggs hatch in the winter, and the young salmon, called fry, emerge in the spring and begin their journey to the sea.
Distribution and Habitat
Pink salmon are found in the northern Pacific Ocean and the rivers that flow into it. Their range extends from California in the United States to Siberia in Russia. They prefer cold, clear waters and are commonly found in coastal streams and rivers.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently lists Pink salmon as Least Concern. However, they face threats from overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change. Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration and sustainable fishing practices to ensure their populations remain stable.

Pink salmon are of significant economic importance in the Pacific region. They are a major target for commercial fisheries and are also popular with recreational anglers. The species is marketed fresh, frozen, canned, and smoked, and is a staple in many diets.
