Pouchoscopy

Pouchoscopy (pronounced: pow-chos-ko-pee) is a medical procedure that involves the examination of the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), also known as a J-pouch, S-pouch, or W-pouch. This procedure is typically performed using a flexible endoscope.

Etymology

The term "pouchoscopy" is derived from the words "pouch," referring to the surgically created internal reservoir, and "-oscopy," a suffix in medical terminology that denotes a procedure involving the use of an instrument to view or examine a part of the body.

Procedure

During a pouchoscopy, the patient is usually sedated. The doctor then inserts a flexible endoscope through the anus and into the pouch. The endoscope allows the doctor to visually examine the pouch and the area around it for any abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, or polyps. If necessary, the doctor can also take biopsy samples during the procedure.

Indications

Pouchoscopy is often performed to investigate symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or rectal bleeding in patients who have undergone colectomy and IPAA. It can also be used to monitor the health of the pouch over time in patients with conditions such as ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis.
