Propargyl Alcohol

Structural formula of propargyl alcohol

Propargyl alcohol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C3H4O. It is the simplest primary alcohol containing an alkyne functional group. This compound is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and has a pungent odor.

Structure and Properties

Propargyl alcohol consists of a three-carbon chain with a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the first carbon and a triple bond between the second and third carbons. This structure is represented as HC_C-CH2OH. The presence of the alkyne group gives propargyl alcohol unique chemical properties, including its reactivity in various organic reactions.

Synthesis

Propargyl alcohol can be synthesized through several methods. One common method involves the reaction of acetylene with formaldehyde in the presence of a base, a process known as the Reppe synthesis. Another method involves the reduction of propargyl chloride using sodium borohydride.

Applications

Propargyl alcohol is used in various industrial applications. It serves as a building block in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other organic compounds. It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in the oil and gas industry.

Safety and Handling

Propargyl alcohol is a hazardous substance and should be handled with care. It is flammable and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Proper personal protective equipment should be used when handling this chemical.
