Pyrenoid

The pyrenoid is a non-membrane-bound organelle found within the chloroplasts of many algae and the hornworts among the bryophytes. Pyrenoids are associated with the carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM) and play a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis by enhancing the efficiency of carbon fixation.

Structure

Pyrenoids are typically composed of a dense matrix of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), which is essential for the Calvin cycle. The matrix is often surrounded by a starch sheath, which is thought to be involved in the temporary storage of carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis. The exact structure and composition of pyrenoids can vary among different species of algae and hornworts.

Function

The primary function of the pyrenoid is to concentrate carbon dioxide (CO₂) around RuBisCO, thereby increasing the efficiency of carbon fixation. The pyrenoid achieves this by actively transporting and accumulating inorganic carbon in the form of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) and converting it to CO₂ in the vicinity of RuBisCO.
