Pyrenoid
The pyrenoid is a non-membrane-bound organelle found within the chloroplasts of many algae and the hornworts among the bryophytes. Pyrenoids are associated with the carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM) and play a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis by enhancing the efficiency of carbon fixation.
Structure
Pyrenoids are typically composed of a dense matrix of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), which is essential for the Calvin cycle. The matrix is often surrounded by a starch sheath, which is thought to be involved in the temporary storage of carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis. The exact structure and composition of pyrenoids can vary among different species of algae and hornworts.
Function
The primary function of the pyrenoid is to concentrate carbon dioxide (CO₂) around RuBisCO, thereby increasing the efficiency of carbon fixation. This is particularly important in aquatic environments where the concentration of CO₂ can be limiting. The pyrenoid achieves this by actively transporting and accumulating inorganic carbon in the form of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) and converting it to CO₂ in the vicinity of RuBisCO.
Occurrence
Pyrenoids are found in a wide range of algal groups, including green algae, red algae, and brown algae. They are also present in the hornworts, a group of non-vascular plants. The presence and structure of pyrenoids can vary significantly among different species and even within different cell types of the same organism.
