Chemical compound

RTI-113 is a phenyltropane-derived stimulant drug that acts as a potent and selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It is part of a class of compounds known as tropane derivatives, which are structurally related to cocaine.

Chemical Structure and Properties

RTI-113, also known by its IUPAC name (–)-2β-Carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)tropane, has a molecular formula of C16H20INO2. The compound features a tropane ring system with a 4-iodophenyl group attached to the 3β position and a carbomethoxy group at the 2β position.

Pharmacology

RTI-113 functions primarily as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which means it blocks the reabsorption of dopamine into the presynaptic neuron, leading to increased levels of dopamine in the synaptic cleft. This mechanism of action is similar to that of cocaine, although RTI-113 is more selective and potent in its effects on dopamine transporters.

Research and Applications

RTI-113 has been used extensively in scientific research to study the dopaminergic system and its role in various neurological disorders. It has been particularly useful in the investigation of addiction and substance abuse due to its high affinity for dopamine transporters.

Comparison with Other Stimulants

Compared to other stimulants such as methylphenidate and amphetamine, RTI-113 is noted for its high selectivity for dopamine transporters over other monoamine transporters. This selectivity makes it a valuable tool in research settings for isolating the effects of dopamine reuptake inhibition.

Safety and Legal Status

RTI-113 is not currently approved for medical use and is not controlled under any international drug scheduling systems. However, its structural similarity to cocaine and potent effects on the dopaminergic system suggest that it has a high potential for abuse and addiction.
