Racine County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 197,727. The county seat is Racine. The county was founded in 1836 and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.

History

Racine County was created in 1836 as a territorial county and was organized in 1839. The name "Racine" is derived from the French word for "root," which refers to the Root River that runs through the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 792 square miles (2,050 km²), of which 333 square miles (860 km²) is land and 459 square miles (1,190 km²) (58%) is water. The county is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 197,727 people, 78,917 households, and 50,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 594 people per square mile (229/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 75.6% White, 12.3% Black or African American, 1.1% Native American, 1.8% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 5.2% from other races. 10.4% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Racine County is governed by a county board of supervisors and an elected county executive. The county is divided into several districts, each represented by a supervisor.

The economy of Racine County is diverse, with manufacturing, healthcare, and retail being significant sectors. The county is home to several large employers, including SC Johnson & Son, Modine Manufacturing, and CNH Industrial.
