Ralph Johnson Bunche (August 7, 1904 – December 9, 1971) was an American political scientist and diplomat who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950 for his mediation in Israel's conflict with Arab states in the late 1940s. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize.
Early Life and Education
Ralph Bunche was born in Detroit, Michigan, and later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then to Los Angeles, California. He attended UCLA, where he graduated summa cum laude and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He then earned a master's degree and a doctorate in political science from Harvard University.
