Range of Motion (ROM) is the full movement potential of a Joint, usually its range of flexion and extension. For example, a knee might be able to flex to a maximum of 90 degrees.

Etymology

The term "Range of Motion" originates from the English words "range" meaning extent or scope, "of" a function word indicating a point of reckoning, and "motion" meaning the action or process of moving or changing place or position.

Definition

Range of Motion refers to the distance and direction a joint can move between the flexed position and the extended position. The act of attempting to increase this distance through therapeutic exercises (Range of Motion Therapy—Physical Therapy) constitutes what is called Range of Motion Exercises.
