Born Richard Raskind in New York City, Richards underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1975, after a successful career as a male tennis player, and became widely known for challenging the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) policy of not allowing her to participate in the women's division of the US Open. Her case, Richards v. United States Tennis Association, was a landmark decision in transgender rights in sports, with the New York Supreme Court ruling in her favor in 1977. This allowed her to compete as a woman in the US Open and significantly impacted the policies regarding transgender athletes in sports.
