A Research Proposal (/rɪˈsɜːrtʃ prəˈpoʊzəl/) is a detailed plan or document that outlines the purpose and methods of a study. The research proposal is a necessary step in the academic research process, often required by academic institutions and funding bodies to assess the validity and feasibility of a proposed study.

Etymology

The term "Research Proposal" is derived from the Latin "recerco" meaning "to seek out" and the Middle English "proposal" meaning "a plan offered for acceptance".

Definition

A Research Proposal is a document proposing a research project, generally in the sciences or academia, and generally constitutes a request for sponsorship of that research. Proposals are evaluated on the cost and potential impact of the proposed research, and on the soundness of the proposed plan for carrying it out.

Components

A Research Proposal typically includes the following components:
