Respiratory condition (pronunciation: /rɪˈspɪrətəri kənˈdɪʃən/) refers to any disorder or disease that impacts the respiratory system.

Etymology

The term "respiratory condition" is derived from the Latin word "respirare" which means "to breathe", and the English word "condition" which refers to the state of something, in this case, the state of the respiratory system.

Definition

A respiratory condition is a medical term for any pathological condition of the organs and tissues that make up the respiratory system. These conditions can affect the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, the trachea, the bronchi and bronchioles, the tissues of the lungs, and the respiratory muscles of the chest cage.

Types of Respiratory Conditions

There are many types of respiratory conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Asthma: A chronic condition that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to inflame and narrow.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe.

  • Pulmonary embolism: A blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs.
