Rhizophora
Rhizophora is a genus of tropical mangrove trees, known for their importance in coastal ecosystems around the world. The genus Rhizophora is characterized by its distinctive prop roots that support the trees in soft, muddy, and waterlogged soils. These roots also facilitate gas exchange in hypoxic (low oxygen) environments and help in the stabilization of coastlines by reducing erosion. Description
Rhizophora species are medium to large trees, reaching heights of up to 30 meters. They have a notable feature of arching stilt roots that emerge from the trunk and lower branches. These prop roots provide stability and support in the soft substrates of their aquatic ecosystems. The leaves of Rhizophora are simple, opposite, and evergreen, with a leathery texture. The flowers are small, with four white petals, and are pollinated by wind and insects. The fruit of Rhizophora is a distinctive propagule, a type of viviparous seed that germinates while still attached to the parent tree, allowing it to root immediately upon falling into the mud.
Distribution and Habitat
Rhizophora species are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean coastlines. They thrive in the intertidal zones of estuarine areas, where they form dense stands known as mangrove forests. These forests are highly productive ecosystems that provide habitat for a diverse array of species, including fish, birds, and invertebrates.
