American stand-up comedian and actor



Richard Philip Lewis (born June 29, 1947) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is best known for his role as a semi-fictionalized version of himself in the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm and for co-starring in the ABC sitcom Anything but Love.

Early life

Richard Lewis was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and raised in Englewood, New Jersey. He attended Dwight Morrow High School and later graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in marketing and communications.

Career

Stand-up comedy

Lewis began performing stand-up comedy in the early 1970s. His comedic style is characterized by self-deprecation and observational comedy, often focusing on his personal neuroses and human behavior. He gained popularity through appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Television and film

Lewis's first major television role was in the sitcom Anything but Love, where he starred alongside Jamie Lee Curtis from 1989 to 1992. He has also made guest appearances on numerous television shows, including 7th Heaven, Two and a Half Men, and Everybody Hates Chris.

Since 2000, Lewis has been a regular cast member on Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by and starring Larry David. In the show, he plays a version of himself, often highlighting his real-life friendship with David.

Writing

In addition to his work in comedy and acting, Lewis has authored several books, including The Other Great Depression, which details his struggles with alcoholism and recovery.

Personal life

Lewis has been open about his battles with alcoholism and depression. He has been sober since 1994 and is an advocate for mental health awareness. In 2005, he married Joyce Lapinsky.
