Ricky Kanee Schachter

Ricky Kanee Schachter (1918–2014) was a Canadian dermatologist and cancer researcher. She was one of the first women to be appointed as a full professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine.

Early life and education

Ricky Kanee was born in 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba, where she also earned her medical degree in 1941.

Career

After completing her medical degree, Schachter moved to Toronto, where she began her career at the Toronto General Hospital. She specialized in dermatology and became known for her research on skin diseases and cancer. In 1968, she was appointed as a full professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine, making her one of the first women to hold such a position.

Schachter's research focused on the role of diet in skin diseases and cancer. She was particularly interested in the effects of essential fatty acids on skin health. Her work led to significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of skin conditions.

Personal life and death

Schachter was married to Dr. Gerald Schachter, a cardiologist. She died in 2014 at the age of 96.

Schachter's contributions to dermatology and cancer research have had a lasting impact on the field. She is remembered for her pioneering research and for breaking barriers for women in medicine.
