Robert H. Michel
Robert H. Michel (March 2, 1923 – February 17, 2017) was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Illinois from 1957 to 1995. He was a member of the Republican Party and served as the House Minority Leader from 1981 to 1995.
Early Life and Education
Michel was born in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Peoria High School and later served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, where he earned a degree in business administration in 1948.
Political Career
Michel began his political career as an administrative assistant to Congressman Harold H. Velde. In 1956, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Illinois's 18th congressional district. He was re-elected 18 times, serving a total of 38 years in Congress.
House Minority Leader
In 1981, Michel was elected as the House Minority Leader, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. During his tenure, he was known for his ability to work across party lines and his efforts to maintain civility in the House. He played a key role in the passage of several significant pieces of legislation, including the Tax Reform Act of 1986.
Retirement and Legacy
After retiring from Congress, Michel remained active in public life, serving on various boards and commissions. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 by President Bill Clinton for his service to the nation.
Michel passed away on February 17, 2017, in Arlington, Virginia.
