Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) was the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. He became president at the end of the Reconstruction Era through the Compromise of 1877.

Early Life and Education

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, to Sophia Birchard Hayes and Rutherford Hayes Jr.. He attended Kenyon College, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1842. Hayes then studied law at Harvard Law School, graduating in 1845.

Political Career

Hayes began his political career as a member of the Republican Party. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and as the Governor of Ohio.

Presidency

Hayes was elected president in 1876 in one of the most contentious elections in U.S. history. The Compromise of 1877 resulted in his presidency, where he agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South, effectively ending the Reconstruction Era.

During his presidency, Hayes worked to reform the civil service and attempted to reconcile the divisions left over from the American Civil War.

Personal Life

Hayes married Lucy Webb Hayes in 1852. They had eight children together. Lucy was known for her support of the temperance movement and was the first First Lady to have a college degree.

Death and Legacy

Rutherford B. Hayes died on January 17, 1893, in Fremont, Ohio. He is remembered for his efforts to reform the civil service and his role in ending the Reconstruction Era.
