Sanjay Gupta

Sanjay Gupta is an American neurosurgeon and medical reporter. He serves as associate chief of the neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, and as an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Emory University School of Medicine. He is best known, however, for his work as the chief medical correspondent for CNN.

Early Life and Education

Born in Novi, Michigan, on October 23, 1969, to parents of Indian descent, Gupta graduated from Novi High School before going on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1990. He later earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1993.

Medical Career

Gupta completed his residency in neurological surgery within the University of Michigan Health System, followed by a fellowship at the Semmes Murphey Clinic, in Memphis, Tennessee. As a practicing neurosurgeon, Gupta performs surgeries at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital, where he serves as associate chief of neurosurgery.

Media Career

Gupta's media career took off when he was hired as a health and medical reporter by CNN in 2001. He has since covered major health stories, including the 2011 Japanese tsunami and the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, where he also performed emergency surgery. Gupta also hosts the network's weekend health program, "Sanjay Gupta, MD," for which he has won multiple Emmy Awards.

Publications and Honors

In addition to his broadcasting work, Gupta is a prolific writer. He has authored several books on health-related issues and writes a column for Time magazine. His work in journalism has earned him several accolades, including Emmy awards for Outstanding Feature Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast and multiple nominations.

Gupta has been named one of People magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" and one of the "Ten Most Influential Celebrities" by Forbes magazine. He also serves on the staff of the Clinton Global Initiative and has been awarded honorary doctorates from multiple universities for his work in the medical field.
