Scaphoid

The Scaphoid (pronounced: /ˈskæfɔɪd/), also known as the navicular bone of the hand, is one of the eight carpal bones that make up the wrist (carpus). The term "scaphoid" comes from the Greek word "skaphos," meaning "boat," and "eidos," meaning "shape," due to its boat-like shape.

Anatomy

The scaphoid bone is situated on the radial (thumb) side of the carpus, beneath the radius and in line with the thumb. It is the largest bone in the proximal row of wrist bones, its long axis directed upward and laterally.

Function

The scaphoid serves as a link between the two rows of carpal bones and is therefore important in maintaining the integrity of the wrist joint. It plays a crucial role in the mobility and stability of the wrist.

Clinical Significance

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone, typically caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand. A Scaphoid fracture can lead to avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply that leads to bone death) because of its unique blood supply.
