Selank

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Selank is a synthetic peptide, derived from the human body's naturally produced tetrapeptide Tuftsin. It is a hexapeptide whith the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. Selank is used as an anxiolytic in the therapy of anxiety and phobic disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

History

Selank was developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Selank is closely related to Semax, another nootropic drug released by the same institute, and is considered to be the more emotionally stabilizing version of the two.

Pharmacology

Selank has an advantage over traditional anxiety treatments, such as benzodiazepines, as it has no sedating or negative cognitive side effects and no associated addiction or withdrawal problems. Selank is used to improve concentration and memory, and it is used to treat anxiety and enhance mood.

Mechanism of action

The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood. However, it is known that Selank modulates the expression of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and affects the balance of T helper cell cytokines. It has been shown to influence the concentration of monoamine neurotransmitters and induce metabolism of serotonin.

Side effects

There are currently no known side effects associated with the use of Selank. It is considered to be safe with no potential for abuse.
