Shoreline

Shoreline (/ˈʃɔːrlaɪn/), also known as a coastline or seashore, is the area where land meets the sea or ocean, or a line that forms the boundary between the land and the ocean or a lake.

Etymology

The term "shoreline" is derived from the Old English words "sceor" meaning "cut" and "line" meaning "boundary". It was first used in the late 14th century to describe the boundary between land and water.

Definition

A shoreline is the fringe of land at the edge of a large body of water, such as an ocean, sea, or lake. In physical oceanography, it usually refers to the area where land and water interface.

  • Tide: Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun, and the rotation of the Earth.
  • Wave: In fluid dynamics, a wave is a disturbance that travels through space and matter, accompanied by a transfer of energy.
