Slide (medical term)

Slide (pronounced: /slaɪd/) is a term used in various medical contexts, most commonly in relation to microscopy and histology.

Etymology

The term "slide" originates from the Old English "slidan", meaning "to glide". In the medical context, it refers to the thin piece of glass or plastic onto which specimens are placed for examination under a microscope.

Usage in Medical Context

In Histology, a slide is a thin flat piece of glass used to hold objects for examination under a microscope. A specimen, often a thin slice of tissue, is placed on the slide and typically stained to enhance contrast between different parts of the tissue. The slide is then placed on the microscope's stage for viewing.

In Cytology, a slide may also refer to the process of spreading a liquid sample (such as blood or other body fluids) across a glass slide in preparation for microscopic examination. This technique, known as a smear slide, allows for individual cells to be spread thinly and evenly across the slide for optimal viewing.

In Pathology, the term slide can refer to the physical glass slide holding a tissue sample, or it can refer to the digital image of that slide. Digital slides are used in digital pathology, where they are viewed on a computer screen rather than through a microscope.
