Snohomish County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, its population was 827,957, making it the third-most populous county in Washington. The county seat and largest city is Everett. The county was created out of Island County on January 14, 1861, and is named for the Snohomish people.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,196 square miles (5,690 km²), of which 2,087 square miles (5,410 km²) is land and 109 square miles (280 km²) (5.0%) is water. The county is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 827,957 people, 299,418 households, and 208,325 families residing in the county. The population density was 396 people per square mile (153/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 74.3% White, 3.3% Black or African American, 1.1% Native American, 10.3% Asian, 0.6% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 5.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.5% of the population.

Economy

Snohomish County's economy is driven by a mix of manufacturing, technology, and service industries. The county is home to the Boeing Everett Factory, the largest building in the world by volume, where the Boeing 747, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, and Boeing 787 are assembled. Other major employers include Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, Tulalip Tribes, and Fluke Corporation.

Education

Snohomish County is served by several school districts, including the Everett School District, Edmonds School District, and Mukilteo School District. Higher education institutions in the county include Everett Community College and Edmonds College.

Transportation

The county is served by several major highways, including Interstate 5, Interstate 405, and U.S. Route 2. Public transportation is provided by Community Transit and Sound Transit.
