Southern Medical University

Southern Medical University (SMU), formerly known as First Military Medical University, Chinese: 南方医科大学, is an institution of higher learning in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province, China. It was founded in 1951 and became one of the premier medical universities in 1978. The university has been a major contributor to the field of medical education, medical research and healthcare services.

In Mandarin Chinese, Southern Medical University is pronounced as "Nánfāng yīkē dàxué".

Etymology

The name "Southern Medical University" reflects the institution's location in the southern part of China. It was previously known as the "First Military Medical University" due to its origin as a military medical school.

Southern Medical University was established on October 22, 1951, by the People's Liberation Army to meet the country's growing need for skilled medical professionals.
