Stigma (Medicine)

Stigma (pronunciation: /ˈstɪɡmə/) is a term used in the field of medicine to refer to the negative attitudes and beliefs that people have about certain conditions or characteristics.

Etymology

The term 'stigma' originates from the Greek word 'stigma' which means 'mark' or 'sign'. In ancient Greece, it was used to refer to a mark or tattoo that was burned or cut into the skin of criminals, slaves, or traitors to visibly identify them as blemished or morally polluted persons.

Definition

In a medical context, stigma refers to the disapproval, rejection, or judgment that people with certain health conditions or diseases may face. This can include mental health disorders, HIV/AIDS, obesity, and many other conditions. Stigma can lead to discrimination, social exclusion, and a lower quality of life for those affected.

Related Terms

  • Discrimination: Unfair treatment of a person or group based on their health condition or disease.
  • Social Exclusion: The process through which individuals or groups are wholly or partially excluded from full participation in the society in which they live.
  • Quality of Life: An individual's overall well-being, including their physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs, and their relationship to salient features of their environment.

Impact of Stigma

Stigma can have a profound impact on an individual's mental and physical health. It can prevent people from seeking help, adhering to treatment, and living a fulfilling life. It can also lead to social isolation and discrimination. Efforts to reduce stigma are therefore an important part of public health initiatives.
