Subclavian

Subclavian (pronunciation: /sʌbˈkleɪviən/) refers to anything related to the subclavian artery or subclavian vein, which are major blood vessels in the upper body. The term is derived from the Latin words "sub" meaning under and "clavis" meaning key, referring to their location beneath the clavicle.

Subclavian Artery

The subclavian artery is a major artery of the upper body, supplying blood to the head, neck, and arms. It originates from the aortic arch on the left side and from the brachiocephalic artery on the right side. The subclavian artery is divided into three parts: the first part extends from its origin to the medial border of the scalenus anterior muscle, the second part lies posterior to the scalenus anterior, and the third part extends from the lateral border of the scalenus anterior to the outer border of the first rib, where it continues as the axillary artery.

Subclavian Vein

The subclavian vein is a paired large vein, one on each side of the body, that is responsible for draining blood from the upper extremities, allowing this blood to return to the heart. It is located beneath the clavicle, hence the name 'subclavian'. The subclavian vein is formed at the outer border of the first rib by the confluence of the axillary and external jugular veins. It ends at the inner border of the scalenus anterior muscle where it joins with the internal jugular vein to form the brachiocephalic vein.
