Super Smash (men's cricket)
The Super Smash is a professional men's cricket competition in New Zealand. It is the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in the country, organized by New Zealand Cricket.
History
The Super Smash was established in 2005, originally known as the State Twenty20. The competition has undergone several name changes over the years, including the HRV Cup and the Georgie Pie Super Smash, before settling on the current name, Super Smash, in 2016.
Format
The Super Smash consists of six teams: Auckland Aces, Canterbury Kings, Central Stags, Northern Knights, Otago Volts, and Wellington Firebirds. Each team plays every other team twice during the regular season, once at home and once away. The top three teams at the end of the regular season progress to the playoffs.
Playoffs
The playoffs consist of a preliminary final and a grand final. The team that finishes the regular season in first place automatically qualifies for the grand final, while the second and third place teams play in the preliminary final for the remaining spot.
Notable Players
Over the years, the Super Smash has seen many notable players, both from New Zealand and overseas. These include Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, and Ross Taylor, as well as international stars like Chris Gayle and Shane Watson.
