TRPC5

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

TRPC5 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily C Member 5) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TRPC5 gene. It is a member of the transient receptor potential channel (TRP) family, which are ion channels involved in various physiological processes.

Function

TRPC5 is a calcium-permeable, non-selective cation channel that is activated by receptor-operated and store-operated mechanisms. It plays a role in the regulation of calcium signaling in various cell types. TRPC5 is involved in the modulation of neuronal growth cone dynamics, which is crucial for neuronal development and synaptic plasticity.

Expression

TRPC5 is widely expressed in the central nervous system, including the hippocampus, cerebellum, and cortex. It is also found in other tissues such as the kidney, lung, and heart.

Clinical Significance

Alterations in TRPC5 function have been implicated in various neurological disorders, including anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. TRPC5 is also being studied for its role in renal disease and cardiovascular disease.

Interactions

TRPC5 interacts with several proteins, including calmodulin, inositol trisphosphate receptor (IP3R), and phospholipase C. These interactions are important for its regulation and function in cellular signaling pathways.
