Tienilic Acid

Tienilic Acid (pronunciation: tee-en-ill-ick acid) is a pharmaceutical drug primarily used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It belongs to the class of diuretics, specifically the thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics.

Etymology

The term "Tienilic Acid" is derived from its chemical structure, which is similar to that of thiazide diuretics. The "Tien" part of the name is derived from the French word "tien," meaning "hold," referring to the drug's ability to hold onto water in the body, thereby reducing blood pressure. The "ilic" part of the name is a common suffix used in the naming of acids.

Pharmacology

Tienilic Acid works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter located in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidneys. This results in an increase in the excretion of sodium, chloride, and water, thereby reducing the volume of fluid in the blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.

Related Terms

  • Diuretic: A type of medication that helps your body get rid of excess water and salt.
  • Hypertension: A condition characterized by consistently high blood pressure.
  • Thiazide: A type of diuretic often used to treat high blood pressure.
  • Nephron: The functional unit of the kidney, where blood filtration occurs.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Tienilic Acid can cause side effects. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, and increased urination. In rare cases, it can cause severe liver damage.

Precautions

Tienilic Acid should be used with caution in patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or gout. It should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to Tienilic Acid or other thiazide diuretics.
