Tourism

Tourism (/ˈtʊərɪzəm/ or /ˈtʊrɪsm/) is the theory and practice of travelling, especially for pleasure, for the purpose of experiencing other cultures, historical landmarks, and natural phenomena. The term originated from the word 'tour' which is derived from Old English 'turian', from Old French 'torner', from Latin 'tornare'; 'to turn on a lathe,' which is itself from Ancient Greek 'tornos' ('τόρνος'); 'lathe'.

Tourism is a significant source of income for many countries and can have both positive and negative impacts on a region's economy and environment. It is related to several fields such as hospitality, travel, leisure, and cultural tourism.

Types of Tourism

There are various types of tourism, including:

  • Ecotourism: This form of tourism involves visiting fragile, pristine, and relatively undisturbed natural areas, intended as a low-impact and often small scale alternative to standard commercial mass tourism.
  • Cultural tourism: This involves travelling to experience the essential character of a place, its people, and its culture, including history and art.
  • Adventure tourism: This type of tourism involves travel with the primary purpose of engaging in an adventure activity such as hiking, climbing, or white-water rafting.
  • Medical tourism: This involves travelling to another country for the purpose of receiving medical care.
  • Dark tourism: This involves travelling to places historically associated with death and tragedy.

Impact of Tourism

Tourism can have both positive and negative impacts on a region. On the positive side, it can lead to economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. On the negative side, it can lead to environmental degradation, cultural erosion, and strain on local resources.
