Transport in India
Transport in India refers to the extensive and varied systems of transportation that serve the world's second most populous country. As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, India has seen significant improvements in its transport infrastructure. The country's transport sector is large and diverse; it caters to the needs of 1.3 billion people.
Road Transport
Road transport is the dominant mode of transport in India, accounting for about 90% of the country's total transport demand. The Indian road network is the second largest in the world, spanning over 5.9 million kilometers. It includes national highways, state highways, district roads, and village roads. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for the management of a network of over 70,000 km of National Highways in India.
Rail Transport
Rail transport in India is an important mode of transport in India. All rail operations in India are run by the state-owned company, Indian Railways. Indian Railways is one of the world's largest railway networks, comprising 115,000 km of track over a route of 65,000 km and 7,500 stations.
Air Transport
Air transport in India is provided by both public and private airlines. India has a total of 125 airports, including 11 international airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is responsible for creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing civil aviation infrastructure in India.
Water Transport
Water transport in India includes movement of freight and passengers by inland waterways and sea. India has a coastline of 7,517 km with 12 major and 200 minor ports. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is the statutory authority in charge of the waterways in India.
Urban Transport
Urban transport in India is characterized by various modes such as walking, cycling, buses, trams, and metro systems. The Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for formulating policies, programs and coordination of all issues relating to urban transport.
