University of Malaya (pronunciation: /ˈjuːnɪˌvɜːrsɪti ɒv məˈleɪə/) is a public research university located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is the oldest and highest ranking university in Malaysia. The university's name is derived from the term 'Malaya' as the country was then known.
Etymology
The term 'Malaya' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Malaiur' or 'Malayadvipa', meaning 'land of mountains'. The term 'University' is derived from the Latin word 'universitas', meaning 'a whole'.
History
The University of Malaya was established in 1949 through a merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine established in 1905 and the Raffles College established in 1928. The university was formed to address the need for a higher education institution in the then Federation of Malaya and Singapore.

The University of Malaya consists of 12 faculties, 2 academies and 3 centres, including the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Education.
