University of Mumbai
University of Mumbai (also known as Mumbai University) is a collegiate, public state university located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is one of the oldest universities in India, established in 1857 during the British Raj. The university is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts students from all over the country and the world.
History
The University of Mumbai was established on 18 July 1857 by John Wilson, under the then British Government. It was modeled on similar universities in the United Kingdom, specifically the University of London. Initially, the university only conducted examinations, awarding degrees to students of affiliated colleges. Over the years, it has evolved into a leading institution for higher education and research in India.
Campuses
The University of Mumbai has three campuses across Mumbai and its suburbs:
- Fort Campus: Located in the heart of Mumbai, this campus houses the administrative division of the university as well as the Faculty of Arts, Science, and Law.
- Kalina Campus: Situated in Santacruz East, this campus is home to the Faculty of Commerce and Technology, among others, and offers a wide range of postgraduate courses.
