University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, or simply Carolina) is a public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Founded in 1789, it is one of the oldest public universities in the United States and the flagship of the University of North Carolina system.

History

The university was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly on December 11, 1789. The cornerstone of the first building, Old East, was laid on October 12, 1793, and the university began enrolling students in 1795, making it the only public university in the United States to confer degrees in the 18th century.

19th Century

During the 19th century, UNC faced financial difficulties and was closed from 1870 to 1875. It reopened with a renewed focus on expanding its academic offerings and infrastructure.

20th Century

The university expanded significantly in the 20th century, establishing new schools and programs. The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center opened in 1949, becoming a major educational and research facility.

21st Century
