The University of Pennsylvania (also known as Penn) is a private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States.

Etymology
The University of Pennsylvania was named after the state of Pennsylvania, which itself was named after the admiral and colonial proprietor Sir William Penn. The word "Pennsylvania" means "Penn's Woods", a reference to William Penn's father, Admiral Sir William Penn.
