The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is a public research university located in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1883, it is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. History
The University of Texas at Austin was established in 1883, following the Texas Constitution of 1876, which called for the creation of "a university of the first class." The university opened its doors with one building, eight professors, and 221 students. The original building, known as the Old Main Building, was a Victorian-Gothic structure that served as the heart of the campus until it was demolished in 1934.
