Varna

Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Situated strategically in the Gulf of Varna, the city has been a major economic, social, and cultural center for almost three millennia. Varna is often referred to as the maritime capital of Bulgaria and is a major tourist destination, a business and university center, seaport, and headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine.

History

Varna's history dates back to the 6th century BC when the first settlements were established by the Thracians. The city was known as Odessos in ancient times, which was a significant trading post for both the Greeks and the Romans. Varna became a vital military and economic center during the Byzantine Empire and later in the Bulgarian Empire after the fall of Byzantium.

In the medieval period, Varna faced numerous invasions by various tribes and was a battleground for control between the Byzantines and the Bulgarians. The city saw a significant development during the Renaissance period when it became a key port and trade center in the Ottoman Empire.

Geography

Varna is located on the northern coast of the Black Sea in the Varna Bay, and it lies at the mouth of the Varna Lake. The city's location on the easternmost areas of the European continent makes it a crossroad between Western Europe and the Middle East.
