Vasitis Nodosa

Vasitis nodosa (pronunciation: vah-SY-tis no-DOH-sah) is a benign condition characterized by the inflammation and nodular thickening of the vas deferens. It is often associated with a history of vasectomy but can also occur in men who have not undergone this procedure.

Etymology

The term "vasitis nodosa" is derived from the Latin "vas" meaning vessel, and "nodosa" meaning nodular or knotty. It refers to the nodular thickening observed in the vas deferens in this condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms of vasitis nodosa may include scrotal pain and swelling. However, many men with this condition are asymptomatic. The condition is often discovered incidentally during investigations for other urological conditions.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of vasitis nodosa is typically made through histological examination of tissue samples obtained during surgery or biopsy. The characteristic histological features include nodular thickening of the vas deferens and infiltration of the vas deferens wall by inflammatory cells.

Treatment

Treatment for vasitis nodosa is usually not necessary as the condition is benign and often asymptomatic. In cases where symptoms are present, treatment may include anti-inflammatory medications or surgery to remove the affected portion of the vas deferens.

Related Terms

  • Vasectomy: A surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception.
  • Vas Deferens: The duct that conveys sperm from the testicle to the urethra.
  • Inflammation: A localized physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful, especially as a reaction to injury or infection.
