Viral Infections

Viral infections (/ˈvaɪrəl ɪnˈfɛkʃənz/; from Latin virus meaning "poison" and infectio meaning "to infect") are diseases caused by viruses. Viruses are small infectious agents that can only replicate inside the cells of living organisms. They can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea.

Types of Viral Infections

There are many types of viral infections, including but not limited to:

  • Influenza: Commonly known as the flu, it is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract.
  • HIV/AIDS: A disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
