History

Visa was founded in 1958 by Dee Hock as BankAmericard, a product of Bank of America. The company was later renamed Visa in 1976. Visa went public in 2008, raising $17.9 billion in what was then the largest initial public offering in U.S. history.

Operations

Visa operates in more than 200 countries and territories, with products available in over 160 currencies. The company does not issue cards, extend credit, or set rates and fees for consumers; rather, Visa provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then use to offer credit, debit, prepaid, and cash-access programs to their customers.

Technology

Visa's global network, known as VisaNet, is capable of handling more than 65,000 transaction messages per second. VisaNet connects consumers, businesses, financial institutions, and governments, enabling them to use digital currency instead of cash and checks.
