Volanesorsen

Volanesorsen (pronounced vo-lan-e-sor-sen) is a medication used in the treatment of familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS), a rare genetic disorder characterized by the inability to break down fats, leading to high levels of fat in the blood.

Etymology

The name "Volanesorsen" is derived from the drug's mechanism of action. "Volane" is a reference to its ability to "fly" or move through the bloodstream, while "sorsen" is derived from the Latin word "sors", meaning "fate" or "destiny". This reflects the drug's ability to alter the course of the disease.

Mechanism of Action

Volanesorsen works by inhibiting the production of Apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III), a protein that regulates the breakdown of fats in the body. By reducing the levels of ApoC-III, Volanesorsen allows for the normal breakdown and removal of fats from the bloodstream.
