Waris Dirie
Waris Dirie (born 1965) is a Somali model, author, actress, and human rights activist in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Born into a nomadic family in the Somali desert near Galkayo, Dirie fled at the age of thirteen to escape an arranged marriage to a much older man. Her journey led her to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, and eventually to London, where she worked as a housemaid for her uncle, the Somali ambassador. It was in London that her modeling career began, after she was discovered by photographer Terence Donovan.
Early Life
Waris Dirie was born into a traditional Somali nomadic family. Her early life was marked by the harsh realities of nomadic life in the desert. At the age of five, she underwent Female Genital Mutilation, a practice deeply rooted in her culture but condemned internationally for its harmful effects on women's health and rights.

Waris Dirie has been a prominent figure in the campaign against FGM. In 1997, she published her autobiography, Desert Flower, which recounts her life from her early days in Somalia, her career as a model, and her work as an activist. The book was an international bestseller and has been translated into numerous languages. It also inspired a feature film of the same name in 2009.
In addition to her work on FGM, Dirie has served as a UN Special Ambassador and founded the Desert Flower Foundation, which works to raise awareness and funds to combat FGM worldwide.
