Waynesburg, Pennsylvania is a borough in Greene County, Pennsylvania, United States, and serves as the county seat. The population was 4,176 at the 2010 census. Waynesburg is located in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh.
History
Waynesburg was founded in 1796 by Colonel John Waynesburg, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. The town was laid out on the land of Michael Cresap, and its early development was closely tied to the agricultural and coal-mining industries in the region. The Waynesburg and Washington Railroad, completed in 1875, was a significant factor in the town's growth, facilitating the transport of coal and other goods.
