Weston A. Price
American dentist known for his theories on nutrition and dental health
Weston A. Price
Weston Andrew Valleau Price (September 6, 1870 – January 23, 1948) was a Canadian dentist known for his theories on the relationship between nutrition, dental health, and physical health. He is best known for his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, in which he documented the dental and health conditions of various indigenous peoples around the world.
Early life and education
Price was born in Newburgh, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1893. After practicing dentistry for several years, he became interested in the effects of nutrition on dental health.
Research and theories
In the 1930s, Price traveled to various parts of the world to study the dental health of indigenous populations. He visited groups in Africa, South America, the Pacific Islands, and the Arctic, among others. Price observed that these groups, who consumed traditional diets, had excellent dental health and physical well-being compared to those who adopted Western diets.
Price concluded that modern processed foods, particularly refined sugars and flours, were detrimental to dental and overall health. He advocated for a diet rich in whole foods, including raw milk, butter, and organ meats, which he believed provided essential nutrients for maintaining health.
Legacy
Price's work has influenced various movements advocating for traditional diets and holistic health practices. The Weston A. Price Foundation, established in 1999, promotes his nutritional principles and continues to advocate for whole, unprocessed foods.
Criticism
Price's theories have been criticized by some in the scientific community for lacking rigorous scientific methodology. However, his work remains influential among those who support traditional dietary practices.
