White County, Georgia is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 30,798. The county seat is Cleveland, and it is known for its scenic mountain views and outdoor recreational opportunities. White County is part of the Gainesville, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

White County was created on December 22, 1857, from parts of Habersham and Lumpkin counties. It was named in honor of David T. White, a state legislator who helped to secure the county's formation. The area has a rich history, with many of its early settlers being of Scots-Irish descent, who came from North Carolina and Virginia in the early 19th century.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 242 square miles, of which 241 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (0.5%) is water. The county is predominantly mountainous, with much of it lying within the Appalachian Mountains. Notable geographic features include Yonah Mountain and a portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest, which offers numerous hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities.
