Wrap (medical)

Wrap (/ræp/), from the Old English wrappan meaning "to cover or enclose", is a term used in the medical field to refer to a bandage or covering that is applied to a part of the body to provide support, immobilize a joint, or hold a dressing in place.

Types of Wraps

  • Compression wrap: A type of wrap that is designed to apply pressure to a specific area to reduce swelling or improve circulation.
  • Elastic wrap: A stretchable bandage that can be used to create localized pressure.
  • Cast wrap: A wrap that is used to hold a cast in place and protect it from damage.
  • Splint wrap: A wrap that is used to secure a splint to an injured limb.

Usage

Wraps are commonly used in the treatment of sprains, strains, and fractures. They can also be used to secure dressings to wounds, to provide support to weak or injured joints, and to reduce swelling in the case of injuries or surgical procedures.
