Yacht

Yacht (/jɒt/; from Dutch jacht meaning "hunt") is a watercraft used for pleasure or sports. The term originates from the Dutch originally referring to a light, fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries.

Types of Yachts

There are two different classes of yachts: sailing and power boats. With the rise of the steam engine, yacht design divided into two main types: the sailboat and the powerboat.

Sailboat

A sailboat or sailing yacht is a yacht propelled partly or entirely by sails. The term covers a variety of boats, larger than small vessels such as dinghies and smaller than sailing ships, but distinctions in the size are not strictly defined and what constitutes a yacht varies by region and maritime culture.

Powerboat

A powerboat or motor yacht is any type of boat or yacht that is powered by an engine, rather than equipped with sails. Powerboats include any number of different types of boats, from cutters to cruisers and dinghies to duck boats.
