Zhong Nanshan

Zhong Nanshan (born October 20, 1936) is a prominent Chinese pulmonologist who emerged to international fame during the SARS outbreak in 2003 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early life and education

Zhong Nanshan was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. He completed his medical degree at Beijing Medical University in 1960. He furthered his studies in the United Kingdom, where he attended the University of Edinburgh and the University of London.

Career

Zhong Nanshan has had a distinguished career in the field of respiratory medicine. He is currently the director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases and the president of the Chinese Medical Association.

During the SARS outbreak in 2003, Zhong was the one who announced the true severity of the situation to the public, despite the initial cover-up attempts by the Chinese government. His honesty and dedication during this time earned him national respect and recognition.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zhong again played a crucial role. He was appointed as the leader of a team of experts at the National Health Commission to deal with the crisis. His public appearances and statements have been instrumental in guiding the public response to the pandemic.

Awards and recognition

Zhong Nanshan has received numerous awards for his contributions to medicine and public health. These include the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, the highest scientific prize awarded by the Chinese government, and the People's Hero title, awarded for his role in the fight against COVID-19.
