American Whiskey

American Whiskey (pronunciation: /əˈmɛrɪkən ˈwɪski/) is a type of distilled beverage produced in the United States. The term encompasses several different types of whiskey, including Bourbon, Rye, and Tennessee whiskey.

Etymology

The term "whiskey" is derived from the Irish word "uisce" (pronounced: /ˈɪʃkə/), which means "water". The full phrase, "uisce beatha", translates to "water of life". The spelling "whiskey" is commonly used in Ireland and the United States, while "whisky" is used in all other whisky-producing countries.

Types of American Whiskey

  • Bourbon: Bourbon is a type of American whiskey that is distilled from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. The name "Bourbon" comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky, where this type of whiskey was first produced.
  • Rye: Rye whiskey can refer to either American rye whiskey, which must be distilled from at least 51% rye, or Canadian whisky, which may or may not include rye in its production process.
  • Tennessee: Tennessee whiskey is straight bourbon whiskey that is produced in the state of Tennessee. The difference between Tennessee whiskey and other types of American whiskey is that Tennessee whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging, a process known as the Lincoln County Process.
