Beta-endorphin

Beta-endorphin (pronounced: BAY-tuh en-DOR-fin) is a peptide that is used by your body as a neurotransmitter. It is one of the many endorphins that are released within the brain and nervous system and can produce effects of analgesia, a sense of well-being, and modulation of appetite.

Etymology

The term "Beta-endorphin" comes from the combination of words "beta", which is the second letter of the Greek alphabet often used in science to denote the second in a series, and "endorphin", which is derived from "endogenous morphine", meaning morphine produced naturally in the body.

Function

Beta-endorphin is released into the blood from the pituitary gland and is involved in pain relief, pleasure, and relaxation. It is considered a natural painkiller because it binds to the opioid receptors in the brain to prevent the release of substance P, a molecule involved in transmitting pain.
